Building Resilience Through Self-Compassion: Supporting Students Under the Restrong Initiative

On 6 August 2026, our Wellness Coach, Dr Shubashini, and Counsellor, Ms Tey Huey Shan, had the opportunity to conduct a resilience-building talk for 21 students from SMK Taman Mount Austin as part of the school’s initiative, Restrong. The programme was specially designed to support students who experience high levels of self-criticism and self-doubt, providing them with practical tools to build emotional resilience and develop a healthier relationship with themselves.

Understanding Resilience Beyond "Being Strong"

Many young people today face significant academic, social, and personal pressures. While resilience is often misunderstood as simply “being strong” or “pushing through difficulties,” the session encouraged students to view resilience from a different perspective. Through interactive discussions and guided reflections, students explored how setbacks, mistakes, and disappointments are natural parts of life and learning. Rather than seeing challenges as evidence of failure, participants were encouraged to recognise that difficult experiences can become opportunities for growth, learning, and self-development.

Exploring the Power of Mindset

A key focus of the session was the concept of growth mindset. Students were introduced to the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and how these perspectives influence motivation, confidence, and responses to setbacks. The hands-on activities created opportunities for students to reflect on their own thinking patterns and consider more constructive ways of approaching challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Addressing Self-Criticism with Self-Compassion

Many of the students participating in the programme identified with harsh self-criticism, particularly when faced with mistakes or unmet expectations. The session therefore placed strong emphasis on cultivating self-compassion and developing a kinder internal dialogue. Students were guided to think about their life journey. Through practical exercises, they learned strategies to respond to themselves with greater understanding and encouragement. By learning to balance accountability with self-kindness, students were encouraged to build a more sustainable foundation for personal growth and resilience.

Empowering Students for the Future

At RUPC, we believe that resilience is one of the most important life skills young people can develop. Equipping students with the ability to navigate challenges, manage setbacks, and maintain a healthy perspective supports not only their academic success but also their long-term psychological wellbeing. Programmes such as Restrong play a valuable role in helping students recognise their strengths, build confidence, and develop the emotional tools needed to thrive in an increasingly demanding world.

We are grateful to SMK Taman Mount Austin for the opportunity to collaborate on this meaningful initiative and support students in their journey towards greater resilience, self-awareness, and self-compassion. Through continued efforts such as these, we hope to empower young people to embrace challenges with courage, view setbacks as opportunities for growth, and move forward with confidence in their own potential.
