Empowering SJK(C) Sengkang: A Dual-Approach to Classroom Well-being and Emotional Growth
On 23 June 2026, the RUPC team had the privilege of visiting SJK(C) Sengkang to deliver a comprehensive, dual-track wellness initiative. By engaging both primary students and their educators on the same day, we successfully fostered a holistic environment focused on emotional literacy, resilience, and positive behavioural management. Here is a closer look at how the day unfolded.
For Students: Taming the “Monkey Mind” and Awakening the “Super Captain”
Our dedicated counsellor, Ms Tey Huey Shan, led an energetic and interactive wellness talk for primary students titled “Monkey Mind and Super Captain.” At the primary level, children are still developing the vital cognitive tools needed to navigate big emotions and sudden impulses. To make these complex psychological concepts accessible, Ms Huey Shan introduced two relatable personas:
The Monkey Mind: Representing our impulsive, chaotic, and highly reactive thoughts.
The Super Captain: Representing the calm, grounded, and thoughtful decision-maker within us all.
Through creative storytelling, everyday examples, and immersive play, students learned the invaluable skill of pausing before reacting. The children participated with incredible enthusiasm, practicing simple, practical strategies to regulate their emotions, improve classroom focus, and make positive choices in their daily lives.
The Big Picture: Equipping children with emotional regulation tools at an early age lays a vital foundation for lifelong psychological well-being, helping them grow into self-aware and resilient individuals.
For Educators: Practical Approaches to Modern Classroom Behaviour
Simultaneously, Dr Chai Wen Jia stepped into the staff room to lead a professional development seminar for SJK(C) Sengkang’s teaching staff: “Empowering Educators: Practical Approaches to Managing Classroom Behaviour.” Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s psychological development, but managing diverse classroom dynamics requires continuous support and evidence-informed tools. Dr Chai’s session focused on looking past surface-level disruptions to explore the underlying emotional needs driving student behaviour.
Key frameworks shared with the teaching staff included:
Root-Cause Analysis: Understanding the hidden emotional triggers behind challenging behaviours.
Structured Environments: Establishing crystal-clear boundaries and expectations with calm consistency.
Relationship-First Management: Nurturing strong teacher-student bonds while maintaining healthy discipline.
Through collaborative discussions and shared case studies, teachers reflected on their current teaching styles and left equipped with fresh, actionable strategies to foster a calm, structured, and supportive learning environment.
Building a Nurturing School Ecosystem
True emotional growth cannot happen in isolation. By simultaneously empowering students with self-regulation skills and equipping educators with compassionate behavioral management tools, we help build a powerful, supportive school ecosystem. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the leadership, staff, and bright students of SJK(C) Sengkang for their warm hospitality and active participation. Together, we are taking meaningful steps toward a healthier, more emotionally resilient future.
